So, I put up the large amounts of money to buy Rock Band and now I'm going to bring you the review of it, that way you can decide if you want to put up the money for it! I got it for the Xbox360, but I will speak about some of the PS3 things as well.
Rock Band is an interesting development in the rhythm game genre. We started off with games like Frequency and Guitaroo Man and we moved into games like Guitar Hero that brings in new peripherals for the consoles. Now we have Rock Band, that builds upon the foundation set down by Guitar Hero as well as games like karaoke Revolution (Think Dance Dance just with Singing instead). Let's start with the track selections for this game. One word, Stellar! I'm quite impressed with some of their choices with this game, though I honestly think they should have left Hole's Celebrity Skin out of the game. Hi, My name is Courtney Love, and I am going to continue to ride on the coat tails of my late husband Kurt Cobain, and think that I can actually play guitar and sing. If you listen to Hole and consider yourself Metal, you need a swift kick in the crotch and a fluorescent pink sticker slapped to your forehead that says douchebag. My hatred for Hole and Courtney Love aside now, let me get into this review properly. As I was saying, the track listening for this game is really good. Radiohead Creep, Metallica Enter Sandman, Iron Maiden Run for the Hills, and many other good ones. Also just like Guitar Hero III for the Xbox 360, they have songs that you can Download. Also, they are doing it on a weekly basis so every week there are new songs to DL, just note they DO cost money. Graphics in this game aren't the high priority. So if you are there to just watch the game and things like that, it's not going to look as pretty as Halo 3 does. In fact, it does look grainy from time to time when you are watching it on a high def screen. At least the background video does. The interface for the notes you are supposed to play, the score, life bar, and meters and shit, are CRYSTAL CLEAR! That much i am extremely happy with. When you are doing the vocal parts, it can get a little tricky to do, because they do scroll across the screen rather fast sometimes. It helps to know the lyrics to the song you are about to sing. As for character customization, this is where Rock Band BLOWS Guitar Hero out of the water. Your character is Full customizable. Okay, so you are set with certain body styles, and face designs... but you aren't stuck with clothing, or tats, or face paint, or hair color, or your own designs for your t-shirts and hoodies and things! Lets just say... XX the drummer is pretty fucking bad ass and i wish i could like like he does! LoL Now they added drums, and singing to the mix. Of course you have the guitars. The Peripherals can be a bit questionable... depending on what batch of them you got. I'll be honest, the design of the guitar after the Fender Stratocaster is fucking sweet and VERY comfortable! The down fall... the strum bar doesn't feel as solid as the guitar hero guitars. I understand that they want to make them quieter... but at the same time, you can't make them feel more flimsy doing it. And it does.. it feels flimsy. I tested out the guitar and i left it there. I'll try playing with it at some point, but I've been on the drums most of the time. Now if you have an Xbox360, you can use the Guitar Hero guitars with the game. If you don't want to put out the money for the full box of stuff , drums, mic, guitar and USB hub, you can play the game with your Guitar hero guitars, and pay normal 360 price for the game. You can't with a PS3. There are lots of technical issues with the PS3 that don't allow you to do that... so you are FUCKED! Sorry to work it like that, but once again the PS3 shows why it really isn't all that good of a system. Don't get me wrong there are some decent games for it.. but not 400USD shelled out for a console worth games. The drums are NICE. I'm enjoying them though I will have to admit they aren't as responsive as I hoped. I've been a drummer for a while now, so of course, I still have to get it through my thick skull that I'm not playing a real set. Though, in terms of someone that has never played on a set, it's set up very nicely. In fact I will be one of the many that says that this is a great tool to use to learn how to play the drums. It's a nice start to getting yourself into basic rock beats. Just for note, I can play some songs on expert, it's just hard for me because i mostly play the drums by ear not by sight. The game makes you play by sight. The microphone works really well. Though it's not easy to fuck up a microphone. The singing part of the game can be fun and can be a nightmare at the same time. How so? Depends on who you have singing really. Someone with a sweet singing voice that you can stand, or someone like me trying to sing. IN the game all you have to do is match the pitch of the singer.... not exactly hard... because you can be off key... VERY off key! Yeah I can't sing. I can growl... I can't sing. Here is the great part on the Xbox 360, any USB mic should work with the game... PS3... different story. Overall it is a VERY fun game. You can play though the game as a solo act to unlock all the songs or you can 3 other friends together and go on a world tour with your band. Everyone gets to make their own character, they pick their instrument of choice, and the 4 of you can go out and conquer the world. You start off in small clubs and you work your way up. It's a great party game if you ask me because up to 4 people can all be doing something in this one. 2+3=Chair is the band Mog and Myself stated. Mog is Lead Guitar, I'm on drums and we fucking pwn! They also have a score duel, who can get the highest score on a song, as well as a tug of war. More or less you go back and forth playing different sections of the song, like in face off on guitar hero, and it's about who can play it better. You can also play together in the songs in an online co-op mode, but the band world tour IS NOT online playable. You need to have your friends there with you. Man do i want to get a band going with 4 of us. Would PWN! My face right off. I give this one a 9 out of 10. I love this game, and it's a lot of fun to play it with friends.
