Soilwork
Devil Driver
Killswitch Engage
Lamb of God

My thoughts of the concert!

What do you get a man that you have the hardest time Christmas shopping for? Concert tickets to see one of his favorite bands.   Mog has never gotten to see Killswitch Engage live and he had to endure his cousin caling him up during one of the shows and making him listen to it.   Well not this time.   This time Mog and I brave the icy New York weather to see Killswitch, oh and it was good.

Soilwork was the opening act for the whole show.  Going into the show, i have heard a couple of Soilwork tracks and I enjoyed them.  I have them on a HeadBangers Ball compliation album.   Well, they blew me off my feet with their live show and it left myself, as well as Mog saying... oh god, we need to buy more of their albums and things.   I mean seriously, they put on a hell of a show, and they are so together when they play that you can't help to bang  your head along.  Though we did find out where they were from, and I wouldn't have expected less.   Hailing from the land that gives claim to Opeth, Sweden, they have to be great just to make it there!

I'll be honest... this is my third time seeing Devil Driver.  They opened up with American Head Charge at the Rammstein, System of a Down, Slipknot concert I went to years ago.  They opened for Moonspell at the first Opeth gig I went to.  (Moonspell obviously opening for Opeth) And now here I am at this concert having to hear them again.   Now don't get me wrong, the band plays well, it's just it's not my style of metal.  It's too American Death Metal for me.  More like a thrash metal type sound, and I'm not to keen into that.   While one track did have me bobbing my head, I just wasn't feeling them again.  Don't get me wrong... if you like that American thrash/death metal sound GO FOR IT! As I said.. it's not like they got up on stage and I was sitting there thinking, "oh my god my ears are bleeding from this shit."  It's just not like thing.

Okay, so now it was time for the act that I really came here to see.  I was so into this concert for Killswith Engage.  Not just because it was for Mog and all that, but also I wanted to see them as well.  I've liked them for a number of years now, it was time to sit back and enjoy their sound live.  And since Killswitch picked up Blood Has Been Shed front man, Howard Jones, I have just really gotten more into their sound.

They took the stages and the place went crazy.   They put on a really high energy, agressive show, with Adam D (lead guitarist) donned in a cape acting like a super hero and being EXTREMELY funny as he played.  I did start to notice something very odd.  Howard was starting to go to the crowd a bit to often during the first few songs.   I started to get really nervous about the whole thing.   While he was belting out the screaming parts with no issue, he was having a problem with the clean vocal parts.   So you get a small break between the songs, and Howard tries to speak.   His voice really isn't there.   So Adam D covers for him and says that Howard isn't feeling well, but he didn't want to give up on the show.

Even though he wasn't feeling well he tried his hardest and he put a SHIT load of energy into band.  Howard was still amazing in his own right that he stayed out there and tried his hardest.   Even on the clean vocals, before giving it to the crowd, he would try to sing them.  Some of them he was able tog et out, others... not so much but he tried.   It didn't ruin the show for me.   In fact I thought it made the show a little more intimate.   While it was a decent sized crowd, we were all able to become apart of the music.  They also played all but one song I wanted to hear.   They didn't play the element of one, and poor Bluetear Wolf had to endure hearing "My Curse" through the cell phone.   Yeah I called her... I had to.

Lamb of God is a band that I've only just started to get into.  Since hearing them in the game "Guitar Hero II", I've been getting a little more into them.  At first, I was against their sound chalking it up to be more American thrash metal, which I'm not to big into.   Then I looked into the lyrics of some of their songs, and I had to give them a second chance.

Their Live performance was UNREAL!  I was singing along, I was banging my head, and I was loving.   They really blew the roof off that Armory, and it was a hell of a show.   Their guitarists are BOTH extremely talented, and it shows.   Come to find out, Lamb of God started off as just an instrumental metal band... so you know these guys know how to play their instruments.  I also have to admit that the drummer has a very unique sound on his drums when he is playing live.   The snare drum has a very high pitched metal sound to it when he hits it, and it just makes the music that much heavier.

I am a little  upset with how loud they had the vocalist, because you could barely make out the words, but hey... it was about the MUSIC damn it.   And it was fucking BAD ASS AND METAL!

This whole show was nothing but "ENJOY YOUR FACE" Metal!  And you know on the next edition of Metal Mayhem I will be pointing it out!    I also know that after this show, I need to play more Soilwork, i need to get the NEW Lamb of God out there (new Album Drops Tuesday December 4)  and of course, Play the already Xeserox over played Killswitch Engage!   Sorry Devil Driver!!!   You guys are good just not my tastes!

Metal Mayhem airs Wednesdays 22:00 - 0:00 GMT only on Eden Underground Radio!
